RECENTLY ...

Thank you for taking action to help make Leith a more liveable place !

As part of the Leith Connections project changes were made to how traffic moves around North Leith, including removing non-residential through motor traffic, adding new pedestrian and cycle routes and helping buses travel through the area.  This has created a Liveable Neighbourhood, also known as a Low Traffic Neighbourhood.

From Leith Links to Sandport, the project monitoring generally shows reduced motor traffic and slower average traffic speeds, better air quality, quieter streets, and more people walking and cycling.  In a survey of people in the area, 74% think these changes have made the area better.  Only 6% don't like them.

The Council have funded a 6-month monitoring report and a 12-month monitoring report.

On February 18th the Council decided to make these changes permanent, at their Traffic Regulation Orders Sub-Committee.

This is great news for less traffic and safer streets in our area, and it wouldn't have happened without your support, so thank you so much for taking the time and effort to contact your councillors.

The Council's Transport and the Environment Committee also heard about the Liveable Neighbourhood when it met on the 30th January, including hearing a presentation from Liveable Leith.  You can see the written submission we made here.

WHAT NEXT FOR THE LTN ?

Council officers are now considering whether to start the process to move the bus gate from Links Place to Links Gardens in order to address increased traffic on Salamander Place. They are also considering further traffic calming works on Duncan Place. Both of these are likely to need a separate committee decision and consultation process, so watch this space.

WHAT NEXT FOR LIVEABLE LEITH ?

Liveable Leith was specifically set up to campaign to make the LTN permanent, so our main objective has been accomplished.

We're now calling a meeting of supporters to discuss what should happen next for Liveable Leith. Should we close the organisation down, or keep going?

If we decide to keep going, can you get involved and commit some time and energy to our work?

And if we keep going, what should be our focus: improving the LTN, supporting Leith Connections, or wider work such as a potential Place Plan for Leith?

Please come along to our next meeting to discuss what next for Liveable Leith:

When? Sunday 2 March 2025
Time? 10am - 11.30am
Where? Leith Community Centre, Newkirkgate
